The free train ride from Tema to Accra that was announced by the Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL) has been cancelled due to encroachment on some parts of the rail tracts.
A statement issued by the company yesterday said the free ride has been suspended for two weeks to allow authorities take measures to address the situation. .
‘’This has come as a result of encroachment observed at Circle, Avenor and Achimota when the Management of GRCL together with The Honorable Ministers of Railways Development and Information inspected the line on Friday 4th January. The encroachers ostensibly returned to the lines when GRCL workers went on Christmas break’’ the statement read in part.
The statement continued ‘’whilst dealing with the encroachers to make the lines safe, Management of GRCL has taken insurance cover for all passengers who patronize the trains and also putting in place mechanisms to ensure maximum passenger safety and comfort. Management of GRCL regrets the inconvenience this might have caused’’.
The company had announced a free train ride that would have lasted a few days beginning from today, January 8, 2019.
