The Ministry of Education has rolled out two ranking schemes for all senior high schools (SHSs) in the country to place each institution in its proper perspective and to fully assess the free SHS policy.
The first, which is to be the national ranking, is expected to rank each school on the scale of one to 10 with 10 being the highest score while the second dubbed: “Similar Schools Ranking” will place schools with equal infrastructure and grading in the same category for fair assessment.

The Minister of Education, Dr Osei Yaw Adutwum, announced this in Kumasi on Monday during the recognition and award ceremony of the “10 per cent Top 10 Schools” in the Ashanti Region.
The 10 represented 10 per cent of the 135 schools in the region whose general performance between the score of A1 to C6 were assessed.
Per the criteria, if a school scores 100 per cent at the WASSCE exams but most of its students score lesser grades such as C6 while another school scores 90 per cent but with stronger grades such as A1, the latter would be ranked higher because of its superlative aggregate.
Top schools
Currently, the top-performing schools in the Ashanti Region per the criteria is Tepa SHS followed by Saint Louis, Toase SHS, Kumasi High, Ghana Muslim Mission SHS and Prempeh College.
The rest, which were all decorated at a ceremony in Kumasi were Kumasi Wesley Girls, TI Amass, Opoku Ware School, Pentecost SHS, Mankraso SHS, and Osei Adutwum SHS established by the minister and handed over to government.
Ranking
In line with the two new ranking systems, the minister said researchers were to be sent to each school for data and assessment which would be collated for both ranking systems.
The national ranking is expected to take off once the current regional assessment and ranking are completed.
Dr Adutwum commended President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo highly for providing a level playing field for students to develop their potential under the free SHS.
Minister
Earlier, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr Simon Osei Mensah, said there were 278 educational infrastructures ongoing in the region with some of them at various stages of completion.
He said all those were part of processes that would lead to the abolishing of the double track system once they were completed.
The regional minister commended Dr Adutwum for his exemplary leadership and for rolling out a national strategic plan to transform the educational sector.
