The Electoral Commission has confirmed that the compilation of a new voters register for Election 2020 has been slated for April this year.
Director of Electoral Services, Dr Serebour Quaicoe who made the announcement on Tuesday, January 21, 2020 says the Commission is hopeful the exercise will end in May.
He told Accra based Starr Fm’s Morning Starr programme hosted by Francis Abban and monitored by BestNewsGH.com that “We want to start by mid-April and by the end of May we would have finished.’’
Dr. Quaicoe was also emphatic when he stated that the EC many not be relying on the National Identification Authority’s data, as they have challenges with it.
He averred that “We have a challenge with their data, we are targeting over 10 million people but they have about 7 million so we don’t know when the will be ready. And besides we have to attach a polling station to all those numbers”.
BestNewsGH.com can report that the EC’s emphatic announcement on the compilation of the new voters register comes amid protests by some minority political parties, particularly the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who are vehemently opposed to the idea.
The Minority parties have planned a series of demonstrations across the country, having already carried out the first in the Northern Regional capital, Tamale last week and followed up with another in the Ashanti Regional Capital, Kumasi just yesterday, Tuesday, January 21, 2020.
