An on-going dispute between chiefs and elders of Ajena and the chief of Akwamu over the ownership of land earmarked for the construction of the Mpakadan Inland Port along the Volta Lake has resulted in a court injunction on the construction.
The court injunction follows negotiations by the Ministry of Railways, Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority and the Volta River Authority with the Akwamu Traditional Council in the acquisition of the land for the inland harbour, despite they (the chiefs and elders of Ajena) being the owners of the land.
Speaking on the issue on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem on Monday, Mr Theophilus Darko, an opinion leader of Ajenaman, said the chiefs and elders of Ajenaman have in their possession documents to prove their claim of ownership of the land.
“The land government wants to use for the construction of the inland port belongs to Ajena, and we have documents at the Lands Commission to prove that the said land belongs to the stool of Ajenaman.
“So I find it difficult to understand why as owners of the land we are not being consulted, rather the chief of Akwamu is the one being consulted,” he said.
The chiefs and elders of Ajena are demanding that they are consulted on all issues pertaining to the construction of the Inland port.
He also debunked claims that the chiefs and elders of Ajena were against the construction of the proposed inland and added they only want to claim what is rightfully theirs.
Meanwhile, Mr Paul Asare Ansah, former director of Ghana Ports and Harbours and the current technical advisor for the project in an interview assured steps were being taken to resolve the issue.
President Nana Akufo-Addo, through an executive instrument, earmarked the entire Mpakadan enclave as the site for the construction of an Inland river port.
