AngloGold Ashanti’s Obuasi Mine has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability through funding, operational support and technical expertise for the Jimi Land Reclamation and River Remediation Project, unveiled by His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene.

Launched under the auspices of the Ashanti Green Initiative (AGI), the project seeks to systematically restore degraded landscapes and remediate the Jimi River, a vital regional water source heavily impacted by illegal mining activities.

The project unites a high-level multi-stakeholder coalition comprising Manhyia Palace, the Ashanti Green Initiative, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs and AngloGold Ashanti. Together the partners are deploying specialized reclamation methods to stabilize riverbanks, decontaminate waterways and restore ecological health to surrounding communities.

Speaking at the launch, Ing. Samuel Pobee, Managing Director for AngloGold Ashanti (Ghana) Limited, commended His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his environmental stewardship and ability to bring partners together to translate his vision into practical action.

He noted that the consequences of the illegal mining extend beyond damage to land and water bodies, affecting livelihoods, community well-being and opportunities for future development. Addressing these challenges, he said, requires sustained commitment, technical expertise, resources and strong partnerships.

“At AngloGold Ashanti, we recognise that our environmental custodianship extends beyond the boundaries of our mining concession. Water is a shared resource, essential to both our operations and the lives and livelihoods of our host communities. Protecting it is therefore a responsibility we share with the government, communities and other partners”, he said.

The company’s backing aligns directly with its 10-Year Socio-Economic Development Plan for Obuasi, a blueprint designed to ensure long-term community resilience where economic prosperity and environmental sustainability advance in tandem.

Ing. Samuel Pobee emphasized that the unveiling marks an important milestone in a longer-term restoration effort. Sustaining the benefits will require continued care, community participation and a shared commitment to preventing future degradation.

“Our hope is that this project will deliver meaningful benefit to communities around the Jimi River and provide learnings that can support similar restoration efforts elsewhere in Ghana. AngloGold Ashanti remains committed to playing its part,” he said.

The company acknowledged the contribution of the project teams, technical specialists and partners and reaffirmed its commitment to continued collaboration to achieve lasting environmental and community benefits.
