Senior lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Gyampoh has indicated that God Himself will question the sense of judgment of the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the ruling New Patriotic Party for their determination to build the national cathedral.
In a video that has since gone viral on social media, Professor Gyampoh was heard saying “you’re sitting there and you’re constructing national cathedral. When people spend time thinking about doing this, you’re raising money to construct a national cathedral. People are doing all these things and you’re there talking about national cathedral. God Himself will question your judgment and sense of priority ” he said in the video which appears be shot outside the country.
The decision by the government to construct a national cathedral has been met with some resistance from sections of the Ghanaian public most of who think there are more pressing issues of importance that ought to engage the government’s attention rather than the national cathedral. These groups include the opposition National Democratic Congress, the Trades Union Congress (TUC) and some individuals.
But just a few days back, the president indicated in the strongest terms yet, when he attended an event at the instance of the Catholic Church that the construction of the National cathedral was non-negotiable.
The finance Minister, Ken Ofori Attah while reading the 2019 budget and government economic policy statement recently, announced that government was giving the seed money for the construction of the cathedral.
This has generated some arguments from sections of the public who believe the move is a misplaced priority.
