An intervention targeting public toilets, refuse dumps and other sanitation hotspots towards public safety following the recent heavy rains and flooding in the Upper West Region is ongoing.
Zoomlion Ghana Limited intensified its commitment to protecting public health with the launch of a comprehensive regionwide disinfection and disinfestation exercise across the Upper West Region.
The intervention, being undertaken in partnership with the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), is designed to mitigate sanitation and public health risks associated with the aftermath of heavy rains and flooding.
As part of the exercise, Zoomlion’s technical teams are disinfecting and disinfesting identified sanitation management areas, including public toilets, refuse dumps and other potential public health hotspots across the region.
The exercise forms part of a broader national intervention aimed at sanitising communities affected by the consequences of heavy rainfall and flooding, particularly areas where stagnant water, accumulated waste and other pollutants could create conditions favourable for disease outbreaks.
Speaking at the launch in Wa, the Upper West Regional Coordinating Director, Mr Damma Shaiku Mumuni, commended the Government and Zoomlion Ghana Limited for supporting efforts to protect communities from public health threats associated with the rainy season.
He stressed the importance of sustaining the intervention beyond the current exercise, particularly as heavy rains continue to create sanitation challenges in many communities.
Mr Mumuni called for closer collaboration between the MMDAs and Zoomlion Ghana Limited to establish sustainable arrangements for regular disinfection and disinfestation exercises.
According to him, such partnerships would help ensure that municipalities and districts remain protected from pollutants and disease vectors associated with poor sanitation and the aftermath of heavy rainfall.
The Upper West Regional Manager of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Mr Maxwel Mba Ayipaala, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to working closely with local authorities and communities to address emerging sanitation and public health challenges.
He explained that the intervention was consistent with Zoomlion’s commitment to supporting national efforts to safeguard public health and improve environmental sanitation.
Mr Ayipaala emphasised that the need for such interventions would remain relevant as seasonal rains continue, stressing the importance of moving from periodic emergency interventions towards more sustainable sanitation partnerships.
“The rains will always come, and the aftermath of rains will always be there. So, we would want that further engagement be held with the Assemblies, so that moving into the future, we will know what is the most sustainable approach for us here.”
He expressed appreciation to the MMDAs, traditional authorities, opinion leaders and other stakeholders for their cooperation and support, while appealing for continued collaboration with Zoomlion in its sanitation and public health operations.
The Wa Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr Adams Moro, assured Zoomlion Ghana Limited of the Assembly’s full support throughout the exercise.
While acknowledging that the Upper West Region did not experience the same scale of flooding recorded in some other parts of the country, he noted that heavy rains continued to create localised flooding and drainage challenges that required proactive interventions.
He said collaboration between the Assembly and Zoomlion would be critical to ensuring that identified sanitation risks were effectively addressed.
The Wa Municipal Environmental Health and Sanitation Officer, Mr Kanyiti Jebuni Abdul-Razak, also disclosed that the Assembly had deployed technical personnel to support Zoomlion’s teams and facilitate the successful implementation of the exercise.
The exercise will focus on carefully identified public spaces and sanitation facilities, particularly areas associated with waste accumulation and other environmental health concerns.
Zoomlion Ghana Limited remains committed to supporting Ghana’s public health and environmental sanitation agenda through strategic partnerships, technical expertise and community-focused interventions.
The company believes that effective sanitation requires sustained collaboration among government institutions, local authorities, private-sector operators and communities.
