Africa’s bane: Lack of access to Capital, Infrastructure and Trust – Bawumia declares at Cambridge University

Former Vice President of the Republic of Ghana and leader of the opposition New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has declared that Africa’s bane is the lack of access to capital, infrastructure and trust.

Apart from the above, the former number 2 gentleman of Ghana, who was also the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections, was resolute in his conviction that innovation, ideas, ambition, and systems to engineer the growth and development of the African Continent abound.

Addressing African Students of the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom last Saturday, May 17, 2025, during their 2025 African Business Conference, Dr. Bawumia was amused at the worth of knowledge and experience shared by the students on the pathways to the economic emancipation of the African Continent.

Dr. Bawumia noted that ‘’ Africa does not lack innovation. We lack systems that scale it. We do not lack ideas, we lack ecosystems that reward and retain them. We do not lack ambition. We lack access to capital, infrastructure, and trust.’

He urged the African students to embrace the responsibility of elevating the continent on the global stage and to become the driving force behind the change and development Africa aspires to achieve.

The former Vice President also encouraged the students to adopt a proactive mindset, leveraging the ongoing digital revolution to create innovative and transformative systems that advance Africa’s progress.

Dr. Bawumia also called for a harmonized global framework that facilitates seamless trade across borders.

He said ‘’But the tide is turning. Let us build a future where a tech start-up in Nairobi (Kenya) can serve a client in São Paulo. Where a shea butter cooperative in Tamale (Ghana) sells directly to buyers in Tokyo using blockchain traceability. Where Africa’s innovations are not celebrated as exceptions – but expected as norms. Africa’s digital future is not pre-determined. We must forge it, deliberately, boldly, together, and now.’’
