The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) seems to be somewhat apprehensive about government’s seeming disinterest in quelling the rising trend of vigilantism in the country and wants some urgent steps taken to deal with the canker.
Chairperson of the Commission, Josephine Nkrumah did not mince words when she said ‘’political party leaders must genuinely exhibit to Ghanaians that they do respect the rule of law, they must show commitment to peace and national stability by disbanding immediately, all militant groups within their rank and file. Enough of the lip service to the rule of law’’
According to her, the commission holds the view that the apparent leniency with which Delta Force vigilantes were handled when they struck a law court to free their fellow perpetrators has further emboldened them to continue to go on that tangent of perpetrating illegalities.
Madam Nkrumah opined that the commission will not hesitate to condemn, name and shame vigilantism and all acts of lawlessness because of the risk it poses to the country’s democratic stability, social security, investor confidence and peaceful co-existence amongst Ghanaians as well as other factors.
She noted that the NCCE considers the issue of vigilantism in the country as a national crisis and called on the security agencies to hasten with investigations into the latest incident that took place in the Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi between Delta Force and the Member of Parliament for old Tafo, Dr. Anthony Osei Akoto.
