The Member of Parliament for Bulisa North Constituency in the Upper East Region James Agalga is angry that drug addicts who require rehabilitation and cure, are usually arrested and prosecuted.
According to him, confining addicts of hard substances to prison rather than helping them out of their predicament only exacerbate their condition.
Mr. Agalga who is the ranking member for parliament’s select Committee on Defence and the Interior added that giving jail sentences to weed smokers only makes them worse on their release or after they have finished serving their sentences, adding that evidence abounds to that effect.
Mr. Agalga added that ‘’they are sick and even whiles in prison they try to find ways and means of getting the substance to smoke. So, it is clear the arrest and prosecution of drug addicts is not the way to go’’.
He is also impressing upon government and parliament to decriminalize the use of marijuana through the passage of the Narcotics Control Commission Bill into law.
He is optimistic that when the Bill is passed into law, it will help the Narcotic Control Board fight illegal drugs in the country.
