Aaron Kanor is new acting Commissioner of Customs

President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Mr. Aaron Kanor as the new Acting Commissioner of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), with immediate effect.

The appointment was conveyed in a letter signed by the Secretary to the President, Dr. Callistus Mahama. Mr. Kanor succeeds Brigadier General Glover Ashong Annan, the outgoing Commissioner of Customs.

According to the appointment letter, Mr. Kanor will provide strategic leadership and operational oversight for the Customs Division. His responsibilities include revenue mobilization, trade facilitation, border security, anti-smuggling operations, and the enforcement of all customs laws and regulations.

The letter further states that the Acting Commissioner will operate under the supervision of the Commissioner-General, with a mandate to strengthen institutional integrity, improve efficiency, and ensure strict compliance with applicable laws and international best practices.

“His Excellency expects that you will discharge your duties with the highest standards of professionalism, integrity and accountability, in line with the Government’s commitment to transparency, revenue assurance, and institutional reform,” the letter emphasized.

In a statement announcing the appointment, the Ghana Revenue Authority described Mr. Kanor as an accomplished customs professional with over three decades of distinguished service in revenue mobilization, border security, and trade facilitation.

The statement highlighted his extensive experience, strategic insight, and dedication to public service, noting that his appointment reflects a career defined by integrity, operational excellence, and strategic leadership.

Mr. Kanor has held several key positions within the Customs Division, including Officer in Charge of Port Operations, where he supervised critical functions such as enforcement of customs laws, revenue collection, and trade facilitation. His leadership significantly strengthened border security systems and enhanced compliance within Ghana’s international trade environment.

Over the years, he has served in various leadership roles across the country, including Sector Commander at Kotoka International Airport and Wa Collections, as well as Chief Revenue Officer in multiple operational areas. In these capacities, he championed intelligence-led operations that curtailed smuggling, uncovered invoice falsification schemes, and disrupted criminal syndicates involved in vehicle identification manipulation, efforts that improved revenue performance and reinforced national security.

Mr. Kanor has also played a pivotal role in advancing modernization initiatives within the Customs Division, including the implementation of electronic valuation systems and other strategic projects that improved operational efficiency and reduced cargo clearance turnaround times. His contributions have helped align Ghana’s customs administration with international best practices while facilitating legitimate trade.

The GRA noted that his appointment marks a significant step toward strengthening customs administration, improving compliance, and supporting Ghana’s economic growth through efficient and secure trade systems, bringing renewed direction to the Customs Division.
