The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Emelia Arthur, has announced the termination of fishing licences for four industrial trawlers that repeatedly violated the country’s fisheries regulations.

Speaking during her turn at the Government’s Accountability Series on Wednesday, August 6, the Minister said the action forms part of broader efforts to promote sustainable and responsible fishing practices within the country’s aquaculture sector.

“We have suspended the licences of four trawlers for multiple regulatory violations. In fact, yesterday and today, the Fishing Enforcement Unit (FEU), led by the Navy, has enforced some measures in some of our key fishing ports.”

She also disclosed that the FEU had arrested “People who have been dealing illegally in premix (fuel)” on Wednesday morning.

Madam Arthur reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s fish stock and protecting the livelihoods of artisanal fishers through stricter enforcement of regulations.

“In line with the government’s manifesto commitment, the cabinet has approved the establishment of an inter-ministerial and inter-sectoral technical team to develop Ghana’s national blue economy strategy.”
