The National Labour Commission (NLC) has directed the Divisional Union of the National Identification Authority (NIA) under the Public Services Workers Union (PSWU) to immediately call off its ongoing strike.
The directive was issued after a hearing on Thursday, June 26, during which both the union and government representatives were engaged on the legality of the industrial action. The NLC released an official statement on Friday, June 27, confirming its position.
The NIA Divisional Union declared an indefinite strike on Tuesday, June 24, over delayed payments of their Operational Support Allowance; the only allowance NIA staff receive to supplement their basic salary.
However, the NLC noted that only national unions have the legal mandate to declare strikes. It ruled the Divisional Union’s action a breach of labour laws. The union admitted the procedural error and issued an apology.
Despite the union’s claim that steps had been initiated to end the strike, the Commission insisted the action was still in force and therefore unlawful, warranting an immediate end.
All parties are expected to return to the Commission on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. to report on progress regarding compliance with the directive and the outcome of further engagements.
